They call us “survivors”. I still don’t understand the difference between a cancer survivor, or a heart attack survivor, drug addiction or the survival of a rare virus. We all suffer and all of us need understanding, support, love and, treatment.

Anyway, a survivor is survivor. Here I am, and the following is my story, unfortunately one of millions of stories.

One day, my boyfriend and I were talking about some plans for next weekend when my cell phone rang. It was a doctor and he said I’m diagnosed with a breast cancer. It was August 2009. My boyfriend and I knew each other for only 4 months by then and I thought this is the end of the relationship. Who needs a cancer patient?
My first reaction was a very predictable old-fashioned women’s cry for 5 minutes. But later I was smiling with great joy!!! Yeah, it sounds crazy, but I felt very optimistic about this experience. Of course, I didn’t want to get sick, but I was sure that the outcome would be a good one. My boyfriend was so supportive and immediately took the situation under control. He knew that there were two cancer treatment hospitals that were the top in the country. Within the week I had an appointment at Sloan Kettering, and I was well taken care of.

My boyfriend was with me for all of my chemo – therapy infusions and he treated me like a Queen, he still does. We laugh all the time and have never had more than 34 seconds of tension between us. Our relationship does not just stem from a romantic and physical love, from the beginning, it was a deep familial love. We were family before we were lovers, very unusual.

Well, the battle started. I saw profound dreams and messages in my meditations. In the dream I was told that I will win this battle by May 09th. And, indeed, all my procedures finished by May 18th (ooops, perhaps my angels/guides made a small mistake). Oh, the physical aspect of having cancer was quite an experience. I felt like was pregnant again =0) All this mood changing, sometimes bone pain, other medical stuff you don’t want to know about . BUT… I just refused to pay much attention to the cancer, I didn’t change my life style (well, I stopped going to yoga class and to the Metropolitan Opera) and I continued to work with my jewelry. I did my best to satisfy my customers and receive a positive energy from them.

I am so grateful and lucky that I got sick in USA. Also, I’m lucky I had only 2nd stage of cancer. I Had surgery in Sloan Kettering Hospital in Manhattan, the surgeon was Doctor Deborah Capko and she did an amazing job!!! The treatment after surgery was absolutely outstanding and I’m so grateful for that.

I’ve got engaged in December 2009, when my hair, eyebrow and eyelashes started to fall out. We’re going to marry soon. My hair is back. I always dreamed about having a short haircut but never had the guts to cut my hair. You see, all dreams can come true.

Treatment varies with each diagnosis from surgery, radiation and chemotherapy. At this time it helps to gain support from family, friends and a support group.

The internet today can play an important role for cancer sufferers and their families. By researching and becoming more knowledgeable about the disease, it is easier to feel more in control of the illness.

Often it is advisable to learn as much as you can about the various cancers, should the unexpected happen you will understand far more of the ‘medical jargon’ when you make that first important visit.

Studies have shown that the more people understand about the disease and the early warnings signs, the more lives can be saved by early treatment.

To help prevent cancer, stop smoking, avoid long exposure to sunlight, excessive alcohol. Attend regular screening sessions and conduct self examination. These methods may help you catch the disease early. If any doubts are ever raised always consult your physician or health provider.

The aim of chemotherapy is to destroy any cancer cells that may have spread from the breast to other parts of the body. Chemotherapy is usually given after surgery and before radiotherapy in primary breast cancer (although it can be given before surgery). It usually starts three to four weeks after surgery, giving the body some time to recover from the effects of the operation. It may also be given as a stand alone treatment in secondary breast cancer. Chemotherapy for breast cancer is usually given as a series of treatments every two to four weeks over a period of four to six months. This can vary, depending on the type of breast cancer and the combination of drugs used.

The gap between courses of treatment gives the body time to recover from any short-term side effects that might occur. Chemotherapy is normally given as an outpatient but individuals will probably be at the hospital for most of the day. Patients will also need to attend outpatient and blood test appointments during their chemotherapy treatment. Chemotherapy affects people in different ways. The side effects can depend on the patient’s individual situation and the specific drugs being used. Two people receiving the same combination of drugs may feel completely different during the course of their treatment. Some people experience very few side effects and are able to continue with their usual activities while others find their lives are affected to varying degrees. Some of the most common side effects are susceptibility to infection, nausea and vomiting, sore mouth, mouth ulcers, tiredness and hair loss or thinning.

The second greatest number of cancer fatalities is from colon cancer.. Each year, roughly 48,000 individuals will die from colon cancer. A large number of these fatalities could be avoided with early diagnosis and treatment through routine colon cancer screening of asymptomatic individuals.

If the cancer is detected as a small polyp in the course of a routine screening test, such as a colonoscopy, the polyp might be able to be removed in the course of the colonoscopy without the requirement for the surgical removal of any segment of the colon. If the polyp grows into a tumor and reaches Stage 1 or Stage 2, the tumor and a part of the colon on each side of the tumor is surgical taken out. The odds that the individual will survive the cancer can be over 90% for early stage cancer..

By the point the cancer gets to Stage III, a colon resection is not enough. The patient will, in addition, need to have chemotherapy. At this stage the likelihood that the patient will continue to be alive over 5 years after the diagnosis falls to fifty three percent, depending on such variables as the quantity of lymph nodes that have cancer.

If detected and treated early, the individual has a high likelihood of surviving the disease. When detection and treatment is delayed, the chances start shifting against the individual so that once the colon cancer progresses to the lymph nodes, the probability is almost even. Plus the chances decrease precipitously when the colon cancer metastasizes.

However, all too often people do not undergo routine cancer screening even when they have symptoms. When the cancer is eventually diagnosed in these situations, the cancer has already advanced to a Stage 3 or even a Stage 4. This happens in more than half of all new diagnosed cases. The individual now faces a very different outlook than if the cancer had been found early through standard screening.

Geinstein fights cancer in many other ways as well. Scientists believe that specific enzymes in the body convert normal cells to cancer cells. Genistein has been shown to inhibit these enzymes just as some cancer drugs.

Genistein may also work against cancers like breast and prostate cancer that depend on hormones to grow. Genistein interferes with these hormones, therefore inhibiting the development of cancer cells and tumors.

Breast cancer radiotherapy is at best an ordeal and at worst a living nightmare for many women.

The worst moment after being told you really do have cancer is being told you will need chemotherapy and radiotherapy as treatment to fight the disease. Having been there I know it’s shocking and I felt I just simply would never cope with it all. I’m writing this article and describing my experiences in the hope that it will make it easier for others to cope. If that applies to you then my thoughts are with you – good luck on your journey. Be strong and you’ll see it through.

My own breast cancer treatment regime was to consist of four treatments of FEC chemo, four weeks of radiotherapy treatment then four treatments of Taxotere chemo. This would all take the best part of ten months.

Having survived the first part of the chemo ( just! ) I went into my radiotherapy a bit bruised and battered. The first thing that needed done was going to a simulator to have the very complicated process of marking out where your treatment would be. This is done with lasers and details of where your tumour or tumours were. Small tattoos are then done to mark out the treatment area. This enables the machine to be set up very quickly every day during treatment.

I mentally decided that for the four weeks of radiotherapy I would treat it like a job. It took 45 minutes or so to drive to the hospital and back every day. The Western General in Edinburgh where I had all my treatments has a fantastic set up for radiotherapy patients. There is a dedicated car park next to the unit and you are guaranteed a space or they will valet park your car. This was amazing and a big weight off my mind as your appointment only lasts five minutes and you have to be there in time as the machines are in use constantly.

The actual radiotherapy lasts a few minutes and is painless-quite relaxing really. Some people find the treatment very tiring. I didn’t, but I think if you’ve had chemo first then your perception of tiredness changes! The going to the hospital every day is a bit of a bind but use any mental trick to over come this.

After a few weeks of treatment the skin over the treated area can become very red and fragile. No soap or creams should be used as these can make your skin even more sensitive. This does clear up but it did cause discomfort for a few weeks. The skin on this area will always be more sensitive and sun should be avoided. It’s also worth mentioning not to forget the exit area – mine was on my back – where the radiotherapy exists your body during treatments.

Radiotherapy treatment, for me, was the least unpleasant of the treatments I went through. At the outset it seems daunting but really it’s not – honestly!
